August 22, 2006:  Located in Little Harpers Ferry, Iowa

79 miles from Winona to Harpers Ferry, IA. Took John's alternate route which saved us a couple miles and was very scenic at the expense of a 1.5 mile climb up probably 7-10% grades. Hadn't seen that since the Cascades, so it will probably warm us up for the hill country of Iowa.

Soon after, we were detoured and encountered 3 miles of hilly, loose gravel - not amusing, to say the least. In Lansing, we stopped at the bank (thanks, Clark) and had ice cream prior to our final push to Harpers Ferry. Two more long, steep hills in this section so we were pretty tired by the time we pulled into our campground for the night. Last night, Phil offered to drive down and keep us company again so both he and Ben picked us up and we had a nice dinner and chat back in Harpers Ferry.

Just to see if anyone is still reading this blog, I have a 2-part trivia question.
First person to email tourdeguts@gmail.com with the correct answer wins an autographed postcard from Iowa! I know this isn't the REAL Harpers Ferry that Civil War buffs are familiar with, but it's close enough. Here goes...Who led the abolitionist force that seized the Federal arsenal in Harpers Ferry and secondly, who led the Federal force that was dispatched to quell the rebellion? Big E, this should be easy for you!

Did You Know?  Some studies have shown as much as a five-fold increased risk in the development of intestinal cancer in people with IBD compared to the general population. Colonoscopies remain the best means for detecting early, curable cancer.
