97 miles from Inlet to Ticonderoga. Since there were no restaurants open in
town, we cooked oatmeal in our lovely room and hit the roads in fog and 40
degrees, our coldest morning yet. Boy, the hands and toes never did get warm for
the first couple hours until we found a convenience store to grab java and a
snack.
Had the biggest hill of the day staring at us when we got back on the bikes,
400' of elevation gain over 1.25 miles. At lunch a little diner in Newcomb where
the owners' best friend died of Crohn's complications about 7 years ago. Which
reminded us again of why we're doing this ride: we need to find a cure for these
diseases!
Not far from the end of our day, we met two recent high school grads (Ben &
Aaron) from Maine who are riding to San Francisco and hope to get there in a
couple months. They were really nice kids and both had trailers full of gear,
around 65 pounds each! We compared notes on the miles that each party has
covered and shared some highlights of what they have upcoming in the next few
states. Jenny, they might be coming through Torrey, so maybe you can help them
out with a place to camp/stay?
Finally, we dropped 900' over about 3 miles into the small town of Ticonderoga
and hit Dunkin' Donuts immediately to make some calls and get our bearings. We
hit Vermont tomorrow after a short ferry ride across the lake. Weather is
supposed to be decent until around nightfall, so we hope to make it over our
first big Eastern mountain pass before the rain hits. More to come... Priuses =
2.
