September 16, 2006:  Located in Portland, Maine

59 miles from Center Conway to Portland, ME! If my math is correct, that makes 4,047 miles in total. Today was day 64 of our adventure, so we made it to the finish two days earlier than scheduled. Foggy and low 50's start to the day led to a confrontation with a black pickup; surprisingly, this was one of only 2 times when we were really buzzed by a car on the whole trip.

Got into Portland around noon and dipped our front wheels in the Atlantic on a nice sandy beach in downtown! On the way to our hotel, we ran into 4 young cyclists who had ridden from Newport, OR to Portland, ME earlier this summer and got a nice photo of them. One even rode a Surly Long Haul Trucker just like mine. Another of their friends had thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail this summer, starting in March and finishing in August. He had some interesting tales, again similar to Bill Bryson's "Walk in the Woods".

The rest of the day was spent picking up some gifts and sampling some of the finest ales Portland's brewpubs have to offer.  The photo of me in the white t-shirt bears a little further explanation...it's actually a Greg LeMond shirt from way back in the late 80's that accompanied me on a failed attempted crossing in 1991. I saved the "golden boy" all those years and carried him across the country, saving the final day's "jersey" in honor of the greatest American cyclist.

Priuses - 13, the most we've seen on any one day all trip!

Did You Know?  Some studies have shown as much as a five-fold increased risk in the development of intestinal cancer in people with IBD compared to the general population. Colonoscopies remain the best means for detecting early, curable cancer.
