Laurel's Story

My name is Laurel. When I was 9 years old I was diagnosed Crohn's disease.  My disease causes stomach pain, nausea, diarrhea, joint pains and cough.

I can never predict when I will have a flare of these symptoms. When I was first diagnosed with Crohn's I was put on a steroid called prednisone.  While on prednisone I gained about 25 pounds and numerous bad eating habits and sleeping habits that were very hard to break. After several months doctors were able to take me off of the prednisone and put me on another medication called 6MP. Because I was still having problems, my doctors added and an IV infused medication called Remicade. I have to get infusions of Remicade every six weeks. Between the infusions and my illness, I miss a lot of school.

I have been on Remicade for about three years now and I am doing pretty well. I play lacrosse, I am in the middle school plays, I get straight As in school, and I spend time hanging out and laughing with my friends. My family and friends have been so supportive through out the years, there are no words to describe how thankful I am for their support. I believe that if everyone is as supportive to the people they know who have Crohn's as my friends as family are to me we will surely be able to work together to find a cure.
